or why is pegasus the symbol of the 16th International Puppet Festival
Riding hall, stables … Zsóka says stallions, Anti puts mares … The organizers decorated the square in front of the Napsugár Puppet Theatre and the Jókai Theatre in Békéscsaba, the yard of Ibsen House and the halls in good mood. Horses fly, hang and glitter in colours everywhere. They announce that the XVIth International Puppet Festival will soon begin. Why Pegasus became the symbol of the festival was revealed by Zoltán Lenkefi, director of the Napsugar Puppet Theatre:
- Poster plans and logo are always based on the idea of an artist. This year, at the Csabagyöngye Cultural Centre there was an exhibition of works of the ceramic and sculptor Éva Farkas-Pap. In fact, we could see small animals, they were very nice, delicately, artistically styled works. They resembled a props storage of a puppet theatre suit, I thought it would have been possible to make a puppet show out of these sculptures. Cats and wolves were also featured on the display, I remembered the Musicans of Bremen for example. I called Eva, who is from Békéscsaba, now lives near Budapest. Otherwise, this year’s season is about to deal with Békéscsaba, so it was quite obvious. So I asked if she was going to make a special animal to the puppet festival, a small mascot, something they used to make for the Olympic games. The artist immediately agreed and then became a horse. So the symbol of the 16th International Puppet Festival was born. Éva Farkas-Pap, by the way, started the idea of the horse that the puppet theatre and our imagination make the horse a pegasus. It was such a good idea that we were doing it on the poster as well, this winged horse can be seen everywhere and I hope that in the soul of everybody the horse once becomes a pegasus.
The puppet-director added that they had created a larger version of this horse, named Pablo, the puppet horse. Colleagues will introduce the various performances with Pablo. Before every play a small etude will be seen trying to get a little mood for the audience. So Pablo jumping off the poster takes over the main square of Békéscsaba during the festival.
